So when I turned my phone alarm off when I woke up this morning I noticed I had a voicemail! Oops! I got a phone call while I was in the dentist getting my fillings yesterday. It was from the second job I had applied for, the one with walruses. I called them back this morning but I haven't gotten a hold of anyone yet. They want to set up an interview! I'm nervous, but not quite as nervous as I was before my last interview. As crappy as it might be, if I don't get either of these jobs I do still have my job at Pilot so I won't be unemployed. Also, now that both of them called back there's a chance at both of them.

It would be amazing if I got one of these new jobs though! I've been trying to keep realistic expectations, which is probably that I won't get either, but the hope is growing anyway. I do want to be optimistic, but I know how much it sucks when I start getting excited and it doesn't work out in the end. xP

Yesterday I had my job interview. I was soooo nervous, I hope that didn't cause too many problems early in the interview. I did calm down as the interview went on, but I feel like my anxiety caused my answers to the first couple of questions be a bit muddled. Scottie said from what he heard of my interview (it was a phone interview as the people involved aren't in Anchorage but a different part of the state) sounded fine. After I was done I had been so certain that I'd bombed the interview, I'm glad that he was able to let me know that I didn't sound like the gibbering idiot that I thought I'd sounded like. Hopefully they give me a chance.

One thing I learned from the interview is that the location is more remote than I originally thought, and I'll have less communication than I do out at Pilot. That's not great, but I think that I'd be more able to handle that when my job would be so much better suited to me. I think that even with the cons of the job, I'd enjoy it. It would be nice to really care about what I'm doing again!

In other news, I currently look like a stroke victim. I went and got a couple of fillings done on the top right side of my mouth. Now half of the top of my mouth is drooping. It also feels enormous. Hopefully the weirdness calms down soon so I can feel normal again, lol.

Sorry for the lack of sculpting updates lately. I don't know what I came down with, but apparently it's still hanging around. My thumb is finally feeling better though, which is a good thing. Now perhaps I can get some sculpting done!

Yesterday was interesting though! I decided to participate in an ice fishing event for work. I got an email looking for people to help with it, and I decided to go for it. It's actually been warm the last week too, which makes it so much more pleasant to think about doing. Warm being around 30 degrees F of course, but considering most of January was spent at -10 degrees F... It's practically tropical. lol :P

Anyway, I was supposed to go out to Jewel Lake at 8 am to help drill holes in the ice (350 holes), then have everything set up for groups of kids to come and start fishing at 10 am. The first group of kids were in 2nd grade, and I think there were about 150 of them. We also had a large group of 6th graders who where there to help the little ones. I went around and helped the kids and watched to make sure everything was going smoothly. The 2nd graders left after an hour and were replaced by some 3rd or 4th graders, who were "watched" by the same group of 6th graders. Unfortunately the 6th graders had lost interest in watching the younger kids by then and were spending most of their time goofing around. Not that it was terrible, and everyone was having a good time anyway so I don't think it was that bad. After an hour that group of younger kids left and then the 6th graders were able to fish themselves. Then they had lunch and went back to school.

After that, another group of kids ranging from 1st to 5th grade showed up, and there were about 150 of them.

With all those kids fishing all day, and even with the lake being stocked with fish, only 6 fish were actually caught. lol I can't say I'm surprised though, the fish that were caught were all along the edge of the lake near the shore, I'm sure all that noise and activity was keeping the fish away from the fishing area. lol

It was fun and I'm glad that I went. It was cold as I was outside all day from 8 am to 6:30 pm, but I wore enough layers and had some hand warmers and toe warmers inside of my boots (THOSE THINGS ARE THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER I WISH I KNEW OF THEM WHEN I WAS OBSERVING OMG). I was pretty cold by noon, but then I had some hot cocoa and soup with lunch and that helped warm me up. I also was able to spend a little bit of time in the trailer (unheated and open the the elements), but it was just enough to get me through.

I was so cold when I got home though, lol.

Holy crap!

Well, you all know that I've been looking for a job and that I've been drowning in rejections recently. I was really starting to get worried about not getting anything, however I've gotten a job! Two in fact! o.O; And I have an interview today or tomorrow and an interview tomorrow. xD;;

I was offered a job last week as a biological aide in DE researching horseshoe crabs (awesomeness!) with a side of shorebirds. I'd be working for US fish and wildlife. All about this is wonderful... except it doesn't include housing. I've found that housing on the East Coast is expensive, and I'll only be making $9.40 per hour. I'm not sure if I have to provide my own vehicle for work related stuff- I'm assuming not but I haven't heard back from the guy about it yet so if I have to drive across country and then be using my gas for work stuff it'll make it even harder for me to afford to do the job.
A friend here has a cousin that lives in DE however, and she might let me stay with her. Apparently she has a big house with 3 bedrooms, 3 dogs, and horses. But I don't know if it's in the right area to work.
I've sent a question to the guy that hired me about vehicle and location stuff, but I haven't heard back yet. There is also the chance that the other 3 aides will need housing and would want to split a place, making it more affordable.
What I would be doing would be to collect horseshoe crab eggs from the field to determine the amount of food for shorebirds. So lab and field work. Some other assorted things, but that's the main thing.
I really want to do it, but I don't know if it's the best choice yet.

Today I got another job offer though! It's an natural resource management internship with a wildlife refuge. I'd be working with shorebirds like piping plover, doing wildlife surveys, assessing mercury impacts on salt marsh birds, and invasive plant species. It'll pay less, $150/week. But I'll have free government housing that is within walking distance of my job, and I'd use government vehicles for my job. So I don't have to worry about driving across the country or spending money on gas for work. So I'm making less money but there is less money output to be there potentially.

Pros of the horseshoe crab job: working with horseshoe crabs= marine invertebrates= what I want to do with my life. Making more money. Longer job.
Cons: Not as diverse experience. No housing provided and housing is expensive. Unsure on vehicle thing. Longer job :P Potential for more money output which negates higher pay.

Pros of internship: More diverse experience. Housing provided within walking distance. Stuff not exactly in my field but stuff I will enjoy anyway. Shorter stay (12 weeks).
Cons: Less pay. Not exactly my field. Shorter stay :P.

So I'm not sure what I want to do. Plus I have an interview for a bird research thing in NE (probably won't happen, but maybe) and an environmental education internship today or tomorrow. The internship is through the Teton Science Schools which happens to be local, and offers a graduate program. This also carries the possibility of taking graduate courses. Includes housing. Did I mention it's local? IE, I won't be away from Scottie for 3-6 months? I might only see him on weekends because it's just far enough away, but still.

I'm glad that I'm finally getting somewhere!!!
