Scottie's wonderful gift for me, and an interesting thing that happened at work yesterday

Today Scottie was awesome and put together terrariums as a surprise for my office! His plan was to remind me of when I worked in Maine with Fish & Wildlife protecting my lovely little Piping Plovers. The plants, with the exception of the moss, are all alive. :3 The ponytail palm reminds me of beach grass (which was his intent), and he has tiny little bird eggs nesting in the sand, which looks like the Plover nests! It is just soooo sweet of him to have done this for me. :D

Yesterday at work, at 4:30 pm the fire alarm started going off. I was confused, and not sure if it was a drill. The fire alarm has never gone off before when I've been there. I've been with Fish & Game for like more than 3 years at this point, but I've spent a fair amount of time in the field, working from home, or on even on leave.

I ran back to my cubicle to grab my jacket and went outside. Winter is here already, so I'm glad I grabbed the jacket! Since it was so close to the end of the day, a lot of people just got in their cars and drove off. I was still assuming it was a fire drill until the fire truck showed up! The firefighters didn't seem terribly concerned, and I didn't see any fire or smoke, so I was hoping it was something minor.

It turned out that this all happened because someone overcooked a bag of microwave popcorn in the breakroom! OMG! One of my coworkers told me that there was another fire alarm about a year and a half ago because someone burned toast! I'm rather amused by so much fuss over such a small thing. xD

I think if I were to get a hermit crab I'd have to make a separate tank for it. I wouldn't want to mess up the pretty scene he made for me! I do have an idea though.... xD

Burned popcorn was responsible for about one fire alarm per week in the undergrad dorms when I was in college. It got to the point where the fire department had to make people leave their rooms, because everyone knew it was just some fool who couldn't use the microwave.

I had no idea popcorn was such a problem! lol It's bad that students got so lax about it though, what if there was an actual fire and everyone thought it was popcorn? o_o

Oh, I agree. My dad is a volunteer fireman, so I always left because I had been trained from birth to do so. The fire department always went through and made sure everyone had exited too. ;)

Microwave popcorn has a lot to answer for along with those frozen pizzas that people toss in ovens and then forget! In college, the next door boys' dorm had an ancient microwave in the shared kitchen. It set off the fire alarm at least once a week. Some of the guys would reach for shoes and jackets as soon as they saw anyone going to the kitchen with popcorn or a frozen dinner. And toasters! Some people never seem to learn that crumbs don't magically vanish but need to be cleared out.

I think that I missed a lot of possible fire alarm dorm drama, I only spent one semester in a dorm officially! I stayed over friends dorms a bit, but most of my college time was spent commuting from home and then walking from my nearby apartment.

It's amusing that people don't realise that toasters don't just magically eat the crumbs or something! I grew up around my gramma who would shake out the crumbs in her toaster after every use. xD

A couple of years ago someone had burnt something quite badly in the kitchen. They spent the next ten minutes straining to cover the smoke detector with a piece of paper - to prevent the fire alarm going off whilst our television programme was going live on air! As soon as the programme ended he relaxed, but thankfully by then the smoke had dispersed.

If we burned anything in the kitchen growing up, I always ended up flapping a pillow or something at the fire alarm until the smoke disappated, but I never had a live show going on in the background! xD
