milleniumgypsy: (walking kitty)
So! I'm in Maine now. I had a crazy bus trip that was about 2 and a half days. I spent three nights on a bus, as my bus took off at midnight to start off. I won't write too much about it because I don't want to make myself sad. :( Anyway, highlights. Most of the time I had a seat partner so I couldn't really sleep. I can only kinda sleep if I can lay on both seats. I had a seat partner for half the night for two nights and a seat partner for the whole night one night I think. One of my seat partners was a woman and her toddler. When she sat with me I was thinking 'Crap! She's got a baby too?! I'll never get any sleep!' I was surprised though as the baby slept thru the night, probably better than I did. She was generally well behaved and quiet, and was off the bus on the next afternoon. I don't know how long they had been traveling, but I was impressed. The woman also had her first hot flash next to me. She was flapping and stripped down to her bra. She got a folder to fan herself with from another passenger and that helped. She was hooting "Good lord! It's so hot!!' She then joked that she couldn't be having a hot flash, she was only 16 (in a joking tone), and that this was why a woman always needed to wear a clean bra. lol It was rather funny.

My trips never go right, but up until the last night things were going smoothly. I always arrived about on time and one driver got us to our endpoint 45 minutes early. The last night though sucked! We started out with an hour delay. At this point I was on the East Coast, er, somewhere. I needed to get to New York where I had a three hour layover. An hour was ok. She was new and it was raining so she wasn't rushing to make up time. She spent longer at breaks then scheduled because she wanted to make sure that we were able to get food. All this was fine... Except while we were there a guy lost his cell phone. He had plugged it in while in the men's bathroom and apparently saw one of the other passengers steal it. The guy that had apparently taken the phone kind of looked like he might have been homeless or something. Not very well off at least. So she came on the bus and said that someone on the bus had stolen his phone. She said that she was going to call the police if the person who took it didn't give it up. She wasn't going to blame whoever took it, just give it up. Otherwise we were going to be stuck there for a LOT longer. No phone. She went outside and talked to him again for a while. She came back in and turned off the lights. She took a bag and walked down the aisle and said that we could all throw away our garbage, and if someone HAPPENED to throw in the phone, that would be GREAT. I think that was a great idea, but still no phone. We waited around for a while and she said she was going to call the police. Finally we took off without the phone. And she got lost. Once we got to New York security and police came on the bus and checked the guy who apparently had stolen the phone. It was there, wrapped in a plastic bag he had on him. He was also playing a PSP. I wonder if he stole that from someone somewhere else. :/ So yay, the guy got his phone back. Boo for being three hours late. At least unlike other missed transfers I've been involved in, A LOT of buses go out of New York to Boston. So in the end I got here an hour late. Not too bad really, but that was SUCH a stressful 14 hours!

About 1 day was spent with me sitting with a professor (taught literature of some sort, I can't remember). She was nice, and we were sandwiched between a group of guys (20 somethings) in the back, one of which was a guy that talked NON-STOP. Fuck this, fuck that, sex, drugs, thongs, etc. Apparently he didn't have a great vocabulary so he had to put a swear in every two words. In front of us was a group of guys basically talking the same shit only in spanish. That was an annoying ride.

I also spent the first two nights with the same group of people. One woman who seemed to embody trailer trash- bad crimped bleach blond hair, jean cut-off short shorts that she shouldn't be wearing, old t-shirt, etc. She was also showing off her tats, that she proudly said she hadn't gotten in jail. Her ex-father-in-law or something did them. There was also a guy who perhaps had been in or was in the military. I'd say he was 18-20. At every layover he would drop and do push-ups.

I played a lot of DS. I loves the DS. But my DS is broken, and I am sad. It works for most things, but my left shoulder button doesn't work. I don't know when it broke, it might have been during the trip but I'm not sure because there are only a couple of games I use that button for. I was trying to play Mario 64 DS and couldn't crouch, but I wasn't sure if I was just doing something wrong. Last night I tried to play Mario Kart and I couldn't slide using that button. So now I know it doesn't work. Is there a way to fix that? I have the pink puppy pawprint DS, so not only do I not want to rebuy it as it is, I like the one that I have. :( I haven't had it that long, I've only had it since December and I haven't done anything to it that I think is out of the ordinary. :/

So I've been here a week, and I'm on my first day off.

Here's what I've done so far:

Monday, first day (short, but this is my format...) )

Tuesday )

Wednesday- thickets and cottontails, and vernal pools )

Thursday- meeting about habitat management, mostly outdoors )

I really like my job. For the first time, when I was told that I should take a day off, I was like 'But, but, what if I miss something? Can't I just work 7 days a week?' :P I'm sure that weekends will be good so that I don't get exhausted... but still. I don't want to take days off! Also when I'm working I don't have time to be sad.

One thing that sucks is that deer ticks are really bad here. Karrie was saying that she's had Lyme disease 3 times so far. I don't want to get Lyme disease! The ticks are frikkin small and I don't have a good way to check for them. If I get one attached where I can't reach (and I actually SEE it) I have no idea what I will do! If they attach but haven't been attached for very long they probably won't transmit. But if I don't see it/can't get to it then that doesn't help. Apparently it is also common for them to hang out in your hair. I can't see the back of my head. :P The one downside of being here I guess. One of the more practical reasons for me to want Scottie here. He could check me for ticks when I got home! :P For now I am standing on a chair to check my back in the mirror over the bathroom sink (it's the only mirror I have) and hoping that there aren't any there. :P
