My costume design! Also, candle making.

Hey guys! I finalized my costume design! I took the armour and jacket and sort of merged it into a battle dress. xD It's an imperfect drawing, but I was only focused on getting out a design. I have never done a fashion drawing before actually, but I don't think they're terribly concerned with the realism of the model. lol

Please ignore the fact that my model looks like an alien giraffe

I'm not sure exactly what materials I'm going to use. The real costume is leather of course, but that's expensive and heavy. Expensive is the more important thing here though. I'm more concerned with it looking good though over comfort, because if it looks like crap because I have the wrong fabric why did I bother, ya'know? I'm considering looking to snag some thrift store/ebay/etc leather trench coats or something to cannibalize.

I've been trying to figure out exactly how the back of the costume works (the flowy bits in the back are my most favorite design element), but I wasn't having the best luck finding good reference photos of the back. I have seen useful video though, though that can be a hazardous proposition. "Oh, I'm just watching this for, erm, research!" *afterward* "Oops, wasn't paying attention to what I meant to! Gotta watch it again I guess, daaarn."

Unrelated, we also started to make candles tonight! I took a couple of pictures of the process, they're under the cut if you want to see them. Basically we need candles for ritual, and we can't ever find the right colours, and we want unscented candles because we burn incense but the large majority of candles seem to be scented already... so we got a candle making kit and are trying out making our own. We just wanted to try some simple white votives for a first try.


Melting the wax. We had to wait for the wax block to melt, but it wasn't supposed to go above 300 degrees.

My mom used to make fancy candles when I was growing up, so I have a bit of an idea of how it works. If I was currently speaking to my mom, I would consider asking her about it. xP

I was planning on doing more this weekend, but I actually ended up being really sick. e_e Because of this I haven't been quite as productive as I would have hoped, but I don't think I did too terrible.

I did play Borderlands 2 with Scottie more, we are at an important story point and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THE FEELS

Scottie had more of an issue trying to figure out what he wanted to go as (that's why I was looking for suggestions from the audience earlier on my journal for costume ideas for him! Which was successful since that's where he got his costume idea from too. :3)
It was super easy for me to pick a theme because I'm obsessive and had been thinking that I'd want to make a costume for the Loki 2 Thor 2 opening anyway. xD

Is there some fandom related thing that you think might be fun to play with? You could be a couple out of OUaT maybe? (I don't watch the show actually, all I know about it is from friends/tumblr, so if this is a bad idea I apologize lol). Or you could join me in my Marvel insanity and do something out of the Avengers? ehehehe Pepperony perhaps? (Pepperony is like my favorite ship name ever lol)

It sounds like we should have taken art classes together because I would describe things like that and people would be like "okay... wait, I see it. YOU'RE RIGHT!" lol.

Candle making looks fun! My mom used to make candles when I was little in fun shapes lol. I always thought it required more work for some reason.

I can and do draw realistically, but for this I thought a cartoony model would serve my purposes fine. xD I was trying to draw what I though models in fashion drawings looked like, and the first thing I thought of when I finished was that she looked like an alien giraffe. xD

Candle making is a bit more complicated than in my photo set, after the candles cool there's shrinkage so you need to pour more wax in, and for the second set of candles Scottie used a double boiler instead of straight heat, and there's a different way to deal with wicks so they behave more easily, and to get green he was messing about with dye blocks... but still they aren't super complicated, especially if you're just doing a votive. :3

I cannot draw people for the life of me, but I can draw things like plants etc. realistically. I was a ceramics major at the time so I had to take some drawing classes. I always drift toward abstract drawing, so the results are better if I draw abstract people instead of realistic people lmao. The last time I was trying to draw a realistic person the chin, idek. The chin came out like Jay Leno lol. Alien giraffe works :P

It sounds interesting! I guess there is more to candle making than I though lol. It sounds like it's a little time consuming, but the best things are :D
