milleniumgypsy: (Rainbow pteri)
So I've done some sculpting over the last couple of days. I haven't gotten as far as I'd like though since I've had some setbacks on the bird sculpt.

I finished the wing bases, put in the beginning texture (feather shapes and pinions), and attached them to the body. Unfortunately they seemed a bit big, and the clay was a bit thin on them because they were too big. I thought I could make it work though, so I finished texturing all the feathers. Then I tried to get the wings to lay flat across the back like they should... and it worked for a little bit. Then the wings came back up and ripped themselves apart on the bottoms in the process. Oh dear.

So today I scrapped the wings so far, made new armatures, covered them in clay, and attached them to the body. They are behaving better now that they are smaller. It's sort of surprising how that small difference in size changes how they behave! I don't think that they'll have the same problems this time. I again have the beginning textures on, with the feather shapes and pinions. I haven't finished the feather textures yet but I'll hopefully do that tomorrow.

I also changed the face sculpt. I had put in some slightly smaller eyes that I had baked previously, but I decided that I wanted them to be bigger. Since I'd already scrapped so much today I decided to pull the eyes out and start that part over. I put in some larger eyes, though I didn't want to bake new ones so they got to be white this time. I'll just paint them later since I didn't want to go baking a whole new batch of eyes. I then changed the face sculpt a bit more since I thought the previous face sculpt was a bit too grumpy looking. I'm much happier with the face now.

I also sculpted the legs, but they aren't attached yet as I'm not going to do anything with attaching them until after I've finished the wings. It's going to be nerve-wracking sculpting on all those feathers because I'm afraid that I'm going to be erasing details as I sculpt around the body. Fur is easier because it doesn't have a specific pattern that you need to create, so if I smudge something out it's easy enough to just fix.

So I'm glad that I've sculpted everything thus far, though I wish that I hadn't spent so much time on stuff that I ended up redoing. xP
