So today was municipal elections for Anchorage. Me and Scottie went and put in our votes for mayor, assorted propositions, and the school board. It looks like most propositions passed except for one, and I'd really been hoping that it would pass. More on that later. Our current mayor is probably going to be re-elected. We voted for the other guy, but the current guy isn't that bad so I'm not that upset about that. We don't have kids or anything, but we looked into the school board people for who to vote for since that's important regardless.
The really annoying thing though is Proposition 5 is probably not going to pass. It's actually something that we'd signed petitions for to get on the ballot. It's an equal rights initiative, and it's important to me.
Here's the text: "Shall the current Municipal Code sections providing legal protections against discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, marital status, age, physical disability, and mental disability be amended to include protections on the basis of sexual orientation or transgender identity?"
Initial polls had the town split 50 for, 41 against, and 9 undecided. One big church group was putting up giant signs everywhere saying "VOTE NO PROP 5! PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS!" Protect your right to discriminate? Riiiight. It also neglects to say anything about the what the actual issue is.
It annoys me, but what really annoys me is this group messed up voting today. We ended up with city-wide ballot shortages because one of the guys heading the ZOMG VOTE NO group told people that you totally could register and vote on the same day. Which is not true, you need to be registered 30 days before the election (I think, but you can't register on the day.) So there were more people coming into vote than there were ballots for, and these ballots might not even count. e_e Anyway, people who were legitimately trying to come in and vote ended up being turned away, or had to wait in line forever (and then might have just given up and gone home.) That's not even taking into consideration speculation that people who don't even live here were coming in to snow the vote. It's just really frustrating. It would be nice if they'd just follow the rules instead of thinking that they're above them.
I am glad that I went and voted anyway though. It's the right thing to do.
I'm not sure how coherent I am as I'm still a sick mess, but I tried to make sense. lol xP
