Continuing saga of financial woes
Jan. 7th, 2012 01:16 pmSo I sold some of my things on ebay! Yay! I'm an idiot who hasn't sold on ebay in years that didn't realize that paypal/ebay changed their policy to hold the money for some period of time after the auction, at least long enough that it won't be in in time for rent. Boo. I'm actually worse off than before because I have to use existing funds to ship things. The last few weeks really feel like the most horrible comedy ever. I just hope it all works out in the end.
Yesterday I was finally able to talk to the new building manager to see if I could get just a couple more days. I've been trying to see the building manager, but it's difficult to because normally the office is just closed with no notice of when anyone will be back (they're supposed to be there from 9-5:30 with a lunch break, Monday-Friday). It's really difficult to see the manager on the times she deigns to be there because I work from 9-5. :P
Scottie was able to get us some money together, and even though everyone is doing things fast it's a long process. The money will get posted to our bank account the day rent is due, the day after rent is due, or the day after that.
I was hoping that she might be willing to work with me since I WILL HAVE THE MONEY. It's guaranteed that it will be there! I just might not be there on the right day, and I have absolutely no way to make it get there faster. At first there'd been a possibility that it would get there sooner but that didn't actually happen.
When I first asked if I might have a couple more days, she replied "Oh you have 10 days from your late notice to pay or you're evicted, just like everyone else." I realize that I'm in the wrong to be late on paying rent. Really. I really do. But to be so flippant about evicting someone after 10 days seems really cold. (Especially in Anchorage in January!) They're even getting late fees so they're at least getting something extra.
I told her that I would have the money, and that in the 2.5 years that I've lived here I've never even been late on rent before or had any noise complaints! It wouldn't be noted anywhere and I didn't mention it, but Scottie even cleans off the snow on the car of the disabled woman who lives above us and takes out her garbage or carries in her bags when we see her. The police have come to both apartments (for different tenants living there even!) surrounding me for noise complaints and partying. You'd think they'd want to keep me as a tenant?
My point being that I'd hope 2.5 years of being very good tenants would count for something.
She then looked at my file since she obviously didn't believe my claims and was looking at me like I was something that you'd find on the bottom of your shoe. "Oh it looks like you've been late once before!" she says, seeming to pounce on the opportunity to prove that I am in fact a horrible person. So she searched the file. "Ah. I guess the month that you were late was... this month." Yay I'm not crazy.
She then said that she might be able to sort of give me another day, if I came in the day it was due with a post dated check for the following day. Since before it was supposed to be a cashiers check or cash, that's an improvement. Unless you can post date cashiers checks, I really don't know. I asked if I could date it for the day after, since that was the last day in the range where the money might come in and nobody wants the check to bounce. She then said something about corporate not liking that and she'd have to talk to her lawyers. Maybe she could. She said she'd get back to me (which I don't actually believe).
Assuming I don't get evicted and don't leave Alaska when my lease is up, I'm going to find a different place to live. It doesn't help that this company owns probably more than half of all rental properties in Anchorage, but I'd rather the insane rental fees went to someone else. I even like my apartment. I really do. It's my home. Even when the neighbors are obnoxious. But this whole experience really makes me sours my opinion of the company. I don't want to be some entitled special snowflake, but we're not talking about a cable bill or internet charges or something unnecessary. We're talking about the place that people live. Is it that out of line that I think that it is excessive that when you are ONE day late, they give you an eviction notice if you don't pay up within ten days?
