Sculpting challenge: Day sixteen!
Dec. 18th, 2011 03:46 amSo I took a longer break than I expected from the sculpting! I've been worried about finances since the money from my summer job is running out and I needed to find a job soon. I had some promising interviews that didn't pan out and it was making me rather anxious. That didn't really make me feel like sculpting. But last week my supervisor from last winter contacted me saying he was interested in hiring me back! The only problem is it doesn't start until January. I have to do some juggling to make it until then (rent is due on the first!), but it should work out. Then I had some holiday things to do, like writing out a million Christmas cards. But I'm finally back to sculpting. Yay!
Tonight I started working on the bear again. I've had the partially finished head chilling in the fridge since I started my break. lol! I finished sculpting the head, then figured out the weirdness with the body armature. I think I got that figured out, then I started sculpting the body. It looked so weird when I started! I told Scottie it looked like a Bear-worm. But as I added the neck fat rolls, belly fat, and sculpted the chest it began to look less weird. After I did some more sculpting and added the ears it really started to take shape. I think it's coming along nicely! The first time I started to add creases to the neck though for fat rolls, I went a little overboard and made them too deep. Then it looked like I had a bear-shark-worm! I smoothed those back out though and made more subtle lines and it worked out much better. lol
Tomorrow I should sculpt the legs, make the armature to attach the legs, and sculpt the fur. Hopefully I will be able to finish the bear tomorrow! My next project is a basset hound. :3
I also started another project! I've been wanting to repaint some Monster High dolls and do reroot of them with different hair. However, I haven't really done a whole lot of customising with those types of dolls. I actually wanted to do OOAK Barbies when I was in high school, and even started to get supplies to do so, but I didn't really have the means or resources to actually do it. Now I have the art supplies to do it, and so I would really like to!
But before I attack on of my MH dolls, I want to practice on some old Barbies since they're the same material. I found an awesome bag of old Barbies at the thrift store for a couple of dollars and told Scottie they would be my new test subjects! lol One of them was a really neat doll. It's not a Barbie but some other company, and it has faux ball joints! Not like the MH joints either, but a rib-cage joint, double jointed knees, and everything. Pretty cool.
Tonight while the bear was cooling I picked the crappiest Barbie in the lot to work on. Her neck was broken and reglued, and the head was glued to the neck. She was one of the old 80's Barbies, her factory face-up was half gone, and she had a head of frizzy ruined blonde hair. First I cut off all the hair as close as I could to the scalp, then I washed her. After that I removed the head and pulled the neck piece out of the head which was stuck up inside of it. I still need to pull the base of all the hair out of the head, but I didn't want to do that just yet. I then took acetone to the face and removed all the factory paint. I'm not sure when I'll continue working on her as the sculpting is my main focus atm, but I think this will be fun. :3
