Yesterday Scottie and I went to see something called Preludes to the Spenard Jazz Fest. It was a lot of fun! There were some local live bands performing at the UAA bookstore. It was nice because it was a free event, it was kicking off the new local music section of the store and advertising for the summer fest. I'm bummed, I'll be in Pilot when it's going on so I won't be able to see the actual show. :P
I'm not sure what my favorite act was. The first act was all instrumental, and the lead woman played a very interesting flute for part of it. But me and Scottie were curious about it but forgot to ask about it when it was all over.
Another thing that I really want to see more of is Rouges and Wenches (or is it Wenches and Rouges?). They perform in costume and look like they'd be a lot of fun to watch. Only a couple of the group were able to be there, but one of them sang the song that they sing if they get "Danny Boy" requests. It's written for anyone who's been asked to sing that one too many times. I forget what it's called, but it involves burying Danny Boy. It is much funnier in context. lol
Another act I particularly enjoyed made me a little nervous with his opening speech. He said he was going to sing a funny song, a more serious song, and then a song about Sarah Palin. If it was a song trumpeting Sarah Palin I would have been rather annoyed. On the contrary, as he said, it wasn't really even a political song. It's called "Please don't ask me about her". It does poke fun at her and all her mishaps, but mainly it's about when the people from the lower 48 ask us Alaskans about Sarah Palin. He said that he's taken to telling people that 'he can see Sarah Palin from his house!' (a la Russia), to give an idea for the feeling of the song.
All and all, it was a very nice 4 hours of music. <3
