Grad student potluck tonight
Oct. 9th, 2009 08:08 amSo I'm supposed to go to a grad student potluck tonight, it's thrown by the profs and hosted at one of their houses. All of the grad students are invited, and we can bring our SOs. It's a nice meet and greet.
Now, a potluck means that you bring a dish and that's the dinner for the party. The prof that emailed us said he hoped we'd bring something better and more imaginative than whatever chips were on sale at Safeway. From -that-, you think that anyone with a brain would realize that you should BRING FOOD. The fact that it's a potluck means by default you BRING FOOD.
So why in the hell do grad students in my classes whenever the topic came up ask in all earnestness 'I wonder if I should bring something?'. Um dude. It's KIND OF THE POINT? It really seemed like they actually read the invite too, since they knew stuff like directions to the prof's house. I suppose they could have heard it from someone else, but the simple fact that it's a potluck should cue them in on what they should do. It's not like I'm dealing with kids or undergrads. I'm dealing with grad students who've held jobs in the real world and are most likely more social than I am. You'd think they'd know more what was going on. o.O
The next thing these confused students would immediately gravitate towards -would- be chips. I wouldn't be surprised if they DID end up picking whatever was in the sale aisle.
It's just really irritating to me right now for some reason. I'm sure that not everyone is that dense, but really, we're grad students. We're supposed to be smart! Following simple directions doesn't seem like it should be so hard. D:
