Well, this was sort of something I was going to post as a response to this entry in childfree (click!), but then I wasn't entirely sure of what I wanted to say coherently. I'm tired from work, so bleh. Anyway, the thing is, I'm not really on the poster's side. And I don't really feel like being flamed at the moment.
Yeah, the girl was stupid to walk into that guy's backyard. But she's 10, yes, old enough to know better (I would have known better!) but still, yes, she is young. We learn thru mistakes right? Everyone messes up sometimes. Her friends are supposed to play with those dogs regularly as the article stated, and they were with her when she went in there. There is a good possiblity that these girls went in there feeling that they were friends with the dogs, and wanted to pet the dogs. Maybe they were stupid and threw rocks at the dogs or something too, and then maybe I'd understand more about the dogs attacking. I realise that they were protecting their territory. Now that I think of it, the guy that owned the dogs prolly should have had a locked gate to make sure people would stay out of his backyard. And yes, I know that the gate should have been enough, but obviously it wasn't... She should have stayed out. Obviously. But still.
Anyway, the dogs did serious damage to the girl. Ripped off her scalp and made her lose her ear while the other dog attacked her midsection.
I'm childfree. I love animals. But that's seriously not something I can just look the other way about. Those dogs are dangerous in my not so humble opinion. (especially considering the article mentioned to the fact that the neighborhood kids play with the dogs regularly...)
So far the sediment at childfree is 'those dogs shouldn't be touched, stupid sprog should have known better! She got what she deserved!' I don't think anyone deserved what she got.
I didn't particularly want to bring my 'but I'm not on the dog's side' comment over there. I don't even know if this entry would fit in the comment size allotment anyway...
I don't think there is any good resolution to this story. It's just sad. I don't think that those dogs are safe though. I normally side with the animals on things, but there are just times when reason should say that you really shouldn't be on the animal's side. And for me, this is one of those times.
(and just fyi, I am not 100% on the girl's side. She was stupid. I realise this. The dogs were being protective of their territory. I realise this too. But it doesn't change the fact that the 'gentle' dogs tried to rip the head off of a kid. This makes them dangerous.)
