Soooo coooold...
Feb. 1st, 2005 12:06 pmI just got in from my fish bio lab. I'm so fucking cold! We had an outdoor lab, out on the ice at this one bay. Ok, I'm alright with being outside in the cold, but we were out on the ice for more than 2 hours... One hour in my feet began to go numb, but even as much as that sucked I could deal. We drilled holes in the ice and were looking around under water with cameras n stuff. It was cool, but still, after we'd been there for a long time not seeing any -fish-... We decided to try another spot on the lake. Ok, so we start walking further towards deeper water. But we still don't find anything. So we decide to go out even further, which is still fine with me. But once we reach almost where the prof had wanted to go we start floundering in slush and -water-. I happen to be one of the ppl who aren't wearing waterproof boots, I'm just wearing sneakers. Ok, great, now we're standing around in slush and water on what doesn't feel like the most stable ice. I wasn't afraid of going thru, but my numb feet were now soaking wet. They began to hurt. ...this is not fun. We still weren't finding anything. So I'm standing there while these 2 students are measuring the temp every 1/2 meter and I'm just now thinking 'when are we going back, is the lab almost over, I -don't care- about the fucking temps, ow ow ow... I'm going to get frostbite yay ow...' So I was slowly moving my feet around because having my feet stay in contact with the ice isn't making them any warmer but I don't think what I was doing was helping that much either, but anyway the prof (Casey, Dr. Huckins if you want to be formal) comes over and is like 'do you have any toes?' And I'm like, well, they hurt actually... He was like, you know, you can go back to the van if you want... And I was like I might consider that (some variation on that). So he goes over to the other prof (Nancy, Dr. Auer), and gives her the key to the van, and me and a few other students walk over back to our intial hole. She was like, well, are you going to go to the truck then? (why'd she say truck? it's a van o.O) Once I was out of the water and had been moving a bit my feet had gotten a little better... that or I was just getting used to them being wet frozen chunks, but whatever. I asked how much longer we'd be out, and she said max a half hour. So I was like, well... I'll be ok. I have a problem with quitting. I have to tough things out. So me and the other students walked over to a shallow spot, and started to drill a hole. By this time Casey and the other students came walking to where we were. We still weren't seeing anything. Casey said that him and a couple of the guys had walked over to one of the ice shanties where there were guys fishing on the ice, and they said that they hadn't had a bite from any fish for 3 weeks. So, ya'know, we're not going to see fish if there aren't any around... So finally we decided that we should go back (me mentally going yay!).
By now my mind had resumed realising that my feet are wet, numb-ish, and hurting. I am no longer warm anywhere either. My hands were numb, my legs felt like lead wieghts, and I was shivering like mad. But at least we were leaving. :P
I don't know what's different about me, I used to be one of the ppl that -never- got cold. But I get cold fairly easy now, and being out on the ice froze me to the bone. I'm -still- cold. I had brought a spare pair of shoes and socks, so I changed when I got back on campus, but I'm now sitting in the computer lab wrapped in my jacket shivering. I wonder when I'll warm up. x.x
