WHO'S TRYING TO BURN DOWN MY HOUSE WTF
So here's my night...

So we were in the middle of watching the newest Resident Evil, and during a scene with an alarm, our insanely loud fire alarms started going off. We opened the door to the apartment building and the hall outside was filled with smoke. I live on the bottom floor and we have a sliding glass door to the outside from our living room, so I felt relatively safe grabbing the animals. Chaos was fine if a bit confused when I went barging into the bedroom to grab him. Of course, he's deaf so he didn't have any idea anything was going on. We found the carrier for the cat and then we couldn't find the cat. Of course, the insane alarm was freaking him out, and he was hiding. Scottie found him and wrangled him into the carrier. He got quite a scratch for his trouble but the kitty was understandably terrified and he doesn't like going into the carrier that much on a good day.
Scottie had the animals ready to go outside and in a panic I grabbed my purse and backpack and shoved in my laptop, Scottie's netbook, my sketchbook, and Thor. PRIORITIES, I HAZ THEM. (Once outside I told Scottie what I grabbed, and that I hadn't been sure what to grab, to which he said "nothing" because he's not insane.)
We don't have renters insurance because first off we're pretty poor, but mostly because the building was supposed to figure out some sort bundled renters insurance. This kept being put off and put off and put off and I think it's been dropped entirely as an idea. Before that we were going to get some ourselves. THIS IS A SIGN WE NEED IT. So I was freaked out to no end that we were going to lose everything BECAUSE SOME IDIOT WAS GOING TO BURN DOWN OUR BUILDING.

Once outside, we put the pets in the truck and waited for the fire dept. Once my initial panic subsided and I was outside, I was basically consumed with rage. I was so, so incoherently angry at whoever had done this and wanted so badly to, erm, make menace. I'm not sure if Scottie was expecting homicidal rage, but that's what I had. xP

I mean, not just my entire life in stuff was in there, but what if we weren't able to find the cat? What if we didn't live on the ground floor so I could with some measure of safety find him and the ferret? I'm the insane person that would have gone and looked for the cat anyway regardless, but that's not necesarily the smart plan. e_e But I was in a house where the pets didn't make it before and NO JUST NOOOOOO NO NO. And still, worse stuff could have happened (which I'd rather not contemplate).
But the fire trucks got here pretty quickly. They found the fire and put it out. It was in the basement. Homeless people come into our building and apparently make fires in our basement (WHICH I DIDN'T REALIZE WAS A THING UNTIL NOW WTF???) because I live with idiots who don't think it's important to lock the outside doors and in fact often prop the building doors open with cinderblocks. It's one thing when they go down there and leave piles of cigarette butts and garbage, it's another thing when they make a fire and almost burn down the building! Just aaaaaaaarg

My god and goddess were smiling on us tonight though and everything turned out alright.

And lol I would have been grabbing random things too. Animals first, then laptop, then ...

ehehehe, I'm glad I'm not the only one! Scottie may have said I was Hermione afterwards. xD

Our neighbors like leaving the doors open, too. They're unlocked during the day anyway, but the janitor locks them at 9 PM. We don't have homeless people in this part of the campus, but teens from the suburbs nearby come here to hide because they don't stick out and when you're in the middle of a college campus, anything can happen. Those kids have broken windows and doors and done God knows what else, but our idiotic neighbors still think it's sensible to leave the doors wide open in the middle of the night.
We live on the 5th floor, but I know I would've still been trying to save stuff like my iPad and external hard drive, LOL. Alex would've probably tried to get the TV. And we have renter's insurance.

Ugh, why do people do that? Homeless people have broken into our storage unit down there too, and other peoples. I really don't understand why people are so set on leaving the doors open. :/ Especially if you have known problems, you'd think everyone would want to keep themselves and their property safe!
ehehehe, I'm glad I'm not the only person who'd be trying to save stuff! I honestly wanted to grab more (my dolls alone were an overwhelming quandry, and so I didn't even take one because it just could not compute) but I knew we should get out.

ehehehe xD As silly as it might have been, vaguely my thought process was 'if I lose everything I'm going to be in dire need of cheering up, and anyway I can't leave behind Loki!' xD

I'm glad to hear though from you too that it's not super expensive!

I had no idea people did that! o_O It's been chilly the past week but last night was actually rather nice weather, so I am just uncontrollably confused. Plus, if people know people are building fires down there WHY doesn't anyone else think "GEE MAYBE I SHOULD KEEP THE DOOR CLOSED". o_O *flails*

I'm so glad you and Scottie and your furbabies are all ok!
I can't believe someone, homeless or not, would be so dumb as to start a fire in a building. Were they trying to give everyone CO poisoning?! Was a lot of damage done to your apartment building?

Thank you dear! *hugs* I'm glad everything turned out alright too!
I was just so uncontrollably confused when I learned that people were lighting fires in the basement! o_O Just, wut? Last night was even decently warm! I'm also perplexed as to why my nieghbors were apparently aware of this and still didn't feel the need to keep the outer doors closed! o_O
Luckily not a lot of damage was done to the building. I don't know exactly what all was though because it looked like the fire was started in a broken in storage room and that was closed up when we looked this morning. I am so grateful that the fire department was so speedy!

DUDE! I would grab my purse, my pet, my laptop, my favorite DVD'S, my games...um....I'm not cray cray...really. XD
They found the fire and put it out. It was in the basement. Homeless people come into our building and apparently make fires in our basement (WHICH I DIDN'T REALIZE WAS A THING UNTIL NOW WTF???)
I'm glad the fire was put out, but, seriously....
WAT.
I....I'm sorry. WAT.
And may I just say how WONDERFUL it is to have another Hiddlestoner on my profile that I can actually be geeky with and they actually UNDERSTAND what I'm talking about?! XDno subject
I know right? I was just so uncontrollably confused when I learned that was a thing! And then added to that knowledge the fact that my neighbors were aware of this and still didn't feel the need to close the outer doors. Just... waaaat.
It is amazing to have a fellow Hiddlestoner for a friend! xD Scottie is lovely about my fangirling, but I know that he's just humoring me. xD

When I read that for the first time, I was like "....eh?!". I'm STILL utterly confused about the whole thing.
You're lucky...the only ones I can fangirl with are other fans...and you! :D

I am just as confused I'm sure. It boggles the mind!
I'm glad that we met so we can fangirl together! ehehehe :D

Some people just confuse me in general. It's just like "....Really?....REALLY?!" with the general wtfery going on in the world.
Me too!
LOKI'D!!

I know, me too! People are so frustrating. xP
I'm happily Loki'd! xD

I know, I have no idea! o_O I'm going to assume (at least hope), that it's an uncommon occurence?? I knew that they were getting down there, and they even broke into our storage room at one point, but fires?! It just boggles the mind. Hopefully this causes my neighbors to actually close the door from now on, if even for a little while! We keep closing the doors when we notice that they're open, but it's a losing battle. :/

Anyway, I'm glad everything turned out ok even though it was scary! Hopefully people will close the damn doors from now on!

It's so frustrating knowing that I'm only as safe as my least intelligent neighbors! The people in your old building sound awful! I'm glad it at least happened after you were gone. I can't imagine dealing with drunk tourists looking for a room all though! o_O
I was hoping that people would close the doors from then on too, at least for a while, but the following night we came home to the doors propped open with cinderblocks again. Just, RARRRRG. DX

What in the wide world is wrong with people? An apartment building door is like a gate and fence on a house - there for security. Convenience of propping a door open is not worth the sacrifice of the whole building's security.
Those gifs are awesome!

I know right? You'd think people would be more interested in keeping themselves safe. o_O
Thanks! Loki is my spirit animal, haha. xD

I have a similar story to tell, I also once woke from a loud bang at 3 AM and heard someone yell: "Call the fire brigade!" I was in my nightgown and very confused about which things to grab. Luckily it was not the house but "just" a motorcycle close to the house burning but still I remember how my adrenaline was running (I don't have any pets and while furniture etc. can be replaced with money, personal things like photoalbums can't)

I'd be freaked out too by that! It's good that it was just a false alarm for you!
I was just glad I wasn't in bed sleeping when the alarm went off. I remember having the fire alarm go off once when I was sleeping at college, I leapt out of my top bunk straight onto the floor! (I landed fine, but it was jarring lol) We sleep in a loft bed so I'd hope I wouldn't do that again. o_O
There are so many things that I was thinking of too when I was leaving the apartment! All my sculpts, paintings, our wedding things, letters, photos, ack so many things... D:
